Switched to VPS
Sunday, 15th March, 2009 // 11:42 a.m.Well I finally motivated my self to switch the hosting to a VPS.
Well its about over an year since I started this blog. I was hosting it on webfaction shared hosting. I really loved their hosting services which were very promising and reliable. I only remember one incident which took webfaction down (fire accident in datacenter) which was a few days of outage. Other than that they were never down.
Anyway webfaction rocks!!!
After a small chat with Will Larson I decided to switch to VPS hosting. I chose linode over slicehost just because I wanted to try it out and its cheap. I like their way of setting up a linode where you allocate the space for images and select distro. You have a lot of freedom with linode. You can enjoy that freedom only if you are comfortable in setting up a linux boxes. There are times you might feel frustrated, you just got to be patient and get it done.
Will Larson's post on 'The Django and Ubuntu Intrepid Almanac' deserves a special mention. I don't know how much time he put into the post but the article is really worth. Writing a detail article needs a lot of patience and traceback every step is really hard. Thank you will for a wonderful post.
I do have one point for the people who follow that post. Since we are creating a group "Sshers" who can access linux remotely, we need to remember to add new user's to that group if you are going to access via SSH. I was trying to set up a git repository and it took me a while to find this out.
Now I am enjoying my new linode with django, rails project(yet to setup) running via nginx proxying to apache with mod_wsgi, couchdb, git repo, and lots more...
Thank you VPS!
